A trip to Bacardi Island
We love hanging around the villa and going to Sosua and Cabarete but it’s fun to go on a day trip to explore other parts of the country. We did just that when we decided to go in Samana and spend the day on a small island called Cayo Levanto. Fun fact, it’s also known as Bacardi island because a popular tv commercial for Bacardi rum was filmed there!
Samana is located on the eastern cost of the Dominican Republic and is host to thousands of humpback whales during winter’s mating season. This is the main tourist attraction for the town with the Whale Museum housing a huge whale skeleton! People enjoy the town's waterfront promenade, the Malecón, with it’s many restaurants and bars.
So off we went on our adventure to go to Bacardi Island. What we didn’t realize when we booked our day trip was it was over 3 hours drive plus the 30 minutes boat ride to the island. But it was well worth it when we got there!
The island is picture perfect with the most beautiful white sand, turquoise water and palm trees lining the beach. The island is very small and half is the beach with the small restaurants and a street with small shops. The other half of the island has a beautiful colonial style hotel that is part of the Bahia Principe resorts. So, you go to the island for the breathtaking views, swim in the ocean and to relax in a beach chair while enjoying your (Bacardi 😊) drink! Experience the island for yourself and watch this short 2 minutes video.
Since we did not have the opportunity to visit the Samana, we promised ourselves that we would go back and stay overnight to explore town and all that it has to offer. If you decide to make to trip there from the villa, definitely stay overnight to be able to go to Bacardi island and explore Samana town over 2 days.
Until next time!
